SS-31, also known as elamipretide or MTP-131, is a synthetic, cell-permeable tetrapeptide investigated for its selective association with the inner mitochondrial membrane. Experimental studies indicate that SS-31 binds cardiolipin, a phospholipid essential for maintaining electron transport chain organization and mitochondrial structural integrity.
In laboratory models, SS-31 has been shown to modulate mitochondrial ROS production, influence cytochrome c interactions, and affect mitochondrial permeability transition pore activity under stress conditions.
